Betty Kwok: The Journey of Becoming an ‘Adult’

Joining Fitwise Management Ltd in April has officially made me an adult. Growing up, I followed society’s expectations and found a part time retail job during high school, then went on to university to study towards a degree. On the stretch between my last exam and graduation, I felt relieved that I could now relax and have time to do the things I enjoy (this doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy my time at university, but singing sounds a lot more fun than writing a 15,000 word dissertation!). However, after what was one of the best days of my life with graduating from the University of Edinburgh, it dawned on me how unknown my future was. The future really was in my own hands!

With a degree in Business and Accounting, I had a lot of options to the fields I could build my career in. Yet after doing research into different job roles, I didn’t have a clue on what I potentially wantedto do for the rest of my life. I loved graphic design when I was in high school but never realised it was my passion until I was in my third year of university and I was developing the branding for my family’s business.

Looking to change my career direction and study towards a qualification in graphic design, I was disheartened to find out all the courses available required a large portfolio which I did not have. Therefore, I looked at roles within my degree fields that allowed my creative side to run free and a career in marketing allows just that. Marketing is an area that constantly demands new ideas so that you keep up with your competitors in this ever changing environment.

This is when I came across Fitwise Management Ltd who were looking for a Marketing Assistant to join their growing team, and I am so glad I am now part of it! It was a little daunting at first when I was still learning about the clients in terms of the medical areas each association focuses on and the jargon that might be used when communicating with the targeted audience, but this all became natural with time.

The best part about this job is that we do a lot of in-house designs of advertising for publications for client’s events and this is exactly what I love doing! I can put my knowledge of graphic design to good use as well as learning all the channels of communication you can use to market this information out to the audience. The thought of my designs being approved by my colleagues and clients, which are then sent out to hundreds of delegates that will be attending these events because of you, is very satisfying!

I have learnt so much in the past month and I hope to keep gaining more valuable experience in my journey with Fitwise to build a steady foundation for a successful career in marketing. Everyone here at Fitwise have been so helpful and friendly, which makes this transition from student to ‘adult’ a lot easier and fun too! Turns out being an adult isn’t so difficult, right?
